umax gamma problems

So I've downloaded the latest umax backend from your web site because of
bad gamma correction with the sane 1.0.1 sources. Pics of this are at:

Note the horrible brightly colored splotches!

I tried the new back end and got this:

Doh! I'm using xscanimage, 8-bit scans (I can't get anything to read the
10-bit scans), and quality calibration (turning this off had no effect).
Any ideas?
