Sorry for quoting so much, just wanted to make sure I was understood...

Oliver, you keep saying "mode", but I think you mean "source". "mode" is
the scan mode (ie, color, lineart, etc..) and even you are using it
this way in the umax backend. I think that's what's causing part of the
confusion.
