Depends on the scanner. Sane really only knows about SCSI scanners...
But, some parallel port scanners are actually SCSI scanners hidden behind a
parport->SCSI adapter. If there is a linux driver for that adapter, then,
theoretically anyway, the scanner could be made to work.
Just in the last few days a new (test) version of the ppSCSI drivers
was posted to the linux-parport list... check out the archived message:

There is also the USB possibility. The linux USB code is evolving
at a huge rate. I wouldn't be at all surprised if in a month or two some
of the USB scanners could be made to work as well.
