library mismatches

Hi,
I know this is not about sane or scanners themselves
but I am stuck. I bought a Mustek SE6000SP scanner
as it seemed to be a good deal. I read the warning
about the SCSI card so bought an Advansys 2930U card
I have it installed and on boot up the scanner is detected.
I then downloaded glib, gtk+, gimp and sane tarballs.
I am having trouble with them. I keep getting all sorts
of errors running the respective ./configure programs.
I got over the first one with glib by altering
an environment variable. I had similar problems
with gtk+ but again altered an environment variable.
When I tried to run ./configure to install gimp I got
an error message about gtk not being installed properly
or that it has been moved since installing it.
Looking in config.log there were a large number of parse
errors in gtkobject.h, gtkwidget.h, gtkctree.h and several
others. I feel there must be a lot of old stuff about but
have no idea what to look for or where to find it.
Can someone please tell me how to get out of this mess?
Do I clear out everything to do with these programs and
libraries? If so were do I clear them from?
When I tried to run configure for sane it fell over but
it was complaining about version numbers as well.
Any help would be appreciated.
