Network scanner over low bandwidth....

Any suggestions on the best way to do network scanning over a slow
connection. My guess (from the picture I got back) is that Net SANE only
scans as fast as it can send data so the scanner only scans as much at a
time as it caches. I'd like to change this so it reads the info, dumps it to
a file, and sends the file out in two different steps... preferably in a
thread-like manner but I guess having pthreads available is not something
that can be relied on.
