Did you compile generic SCSI support into your kernel? Do your boot messages specify to which generic SCSI
device the scanner is assigned?

Here is what I get upon booting:
Mar 31 13:59:07 Snapperorgans kernel: Vendor: UMAX Model: Astra 610S Rev: V1.3

i.e. you shouldn't have to guess the generic SCSI device.
