Have HP 4P, need more res

Am working with an HP Scanjet 4P, scanning with xscanimage 1.0 out of
gimp 1.02. Everything works great; only hangup is that this scanner is
advertised as 300dpi optical with 1200 enhanced. However, I find I can
only actually get 600dpi. Same result with xvscan 1.60.

I've heard to get the full 1200 dpi enhanced mode you have to scan out
of Windows 9x using some dll that comes with the scanner. Can anyone
confirm? Or is there a way to deal with this within Linux?

Since I need more resolution for a project, I'm thinking of going to
an HP 6200 Cse, advertised as 1200x1200, with "virtually unlimited"
enhanced mode. But: will I have the same problem over again? Has
anyone gotten 1200dpi or higher out of this?

By the way, I find you have to actually look at the file gimp
produces. Xscanimage happily lets you dial in arbitrarily high dpi's
but doesn't seem to let you know you got less than what you
wanted. (xvscan does this too).

BTW any other recommendations for a scanner in this class?

thanks,
