HP 4C Scanner and SANE

I have a HP Scanjet 4c I am trying to use under FreeBSD 2.2.8. I have it
connected to an Adaptec AHA 1510A SCSI card. The scanner is terminated
as are the internal bus connectors. I am using SANE 0.74 as it is the one
that came with the ports. The scanner is recognized by the system at
startup and is using device uk0 at SCSI id 2.

When I run find-scanner with the -v flag it claims it is checking /dev/uk0
and I suppose it is. But it times out after about 10 minutes and claims
it found a disk at /dev/uk0.

If I run scanimage pointing it directly at /dev/uk0 it claims it failed to
open device. The same with xscanimage. I have a line in hp.conf saying
/dev/uk0 only. In dll.conf I have commented out all lines except for hp.

It would seem to me it is not recogizing my scanner.

On a related note I tried to get SANE 1.00 compiled and use that instead.
The compile fails with this error.

-------------------------------------------------
making all in backend
"Makefile", line 216: Missing dependency operator
"Makefile", line 227: Need an operator
make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
*** Error code 1
------------------------------------------------

I would rather have 1.00 running. But either one will make me happy.

If anyone has a clue to share I would love to hear it.

Thanks...Tony...
