Scanace, anyone?

I have bumped into someone from Pacific Image Electronics
(http://www.scanace.com)and somehow gotten them to let me write a SANE
backend for their scanners.

Does anyone have some practical advice for starting out? This project
is a real stretch for me as I am not a professional C-coder, just a
read-and-modifier. I have reviewed the UMAX*.[ch] and I think I
understand it and I plan to start from there. Any other suggestions,
cautions, expressions of disbelief, etc?
