No. There is no technical problem (well - there is one, but none, that
couldn't be solved with a few lines of code), but a documentation problem.

Scanner manufacturers seemingly think, that their parallel port protocols
are so stupid that everyone would laugh at them for decades, if they
would give them out.

And it is pretty enervating work to reverse engineer any protocol. The
problem is probably, that it takes a real freak to do that, and real
freaks tend to use SCSI anyway.

That are the main reasons, why parallel scanners are not supported as well
as SCSI ones in SANE.
