question about microtek scanner

I have a Microtek ScanMaker V600 (SCSI-2 scanner) that I am trying to
use under linux. I haven't had much luck. I installed SANE 1.0 from an
RPM and everything seems to be ok, but it won't recognize the device.
The system sees it at boot time and recognizes it as a scanner but
SANE won't pick it up. The scanner is SCSI id 6 so it should be
/dev/sge, correct? I've tried changing the configuration file for the
microtek2 backend but I can't get SANE to recognize the scanner any
ideas?

I sent a similar question to this list a couple of days ago, but I lost
(accidently deleted) a bunch of unread mail so I missed any replies
