This is really an OS issue, rather than a SANE issue. SANE talks to
the OS's SCSI interface. E.g. on FreeBSD with CAM (Common Access
Method; an ANSI standard), SANE talks to CAM, which, in turn, talks
to the SIM (i.e. driver for the SCSI card) which talks to the
hardware.

To support the card that comes with the umax scanner, a SIM would need
to be written for that card, on the particular OS you are concerned
with (which you didn't mention).
