To answer my own message now that I have made it all work.
As earlier said, I couldn't compile the xscanimage as I had an updated
gtk+ and gimp (1.04 / 1.00). So I went ahead on another box that has
vanilla RH5.1 installed, no updates. Here the xscanimage compiled just
fine, so I took the files over to the PC that th scanner is connected to.
now issueing the command xscanimage mustek:/dev/scanner fired it up, and
everything worked just perfect, even the color scanning.
Now to documentation. There are two things I didn't figure out for a long
time as I stuck to reading all the man files instead of browsing the
sane web page.
First - network scanning. How to start xscanimage up from a remote
computer. xscanimage net:hostname:mustek:/dev/scanner
Second - how to use xscanimage as a gimp plug-in from a remote computer.
There is absolutely no documentation on this, and this also took me quite
some time to figure out that I needed to edit ~/.gimp/pluginrc to add a
new section starting with:
(proc-def "xscanimage-net-3a-troll.isengard.no-3a-mustek-3a-/dev/scanner"
hope this can somehow be useful for others..
