Scanimage/Xscanimage setup information sought

Greetings - First, please excuse my posting this note to the 'devel' list,
as it is really an 'install' question, but I haven't found another source
- I came up dry with comp.linux.* groups. Redirection to appropriate
references is of course welcome.

I built 'sane' and sibs from 'sane-0.73.tar.gz', along with
'gimp-0.99.31', and 'gtk+-1.0.2', all from the source tarballs.
They appear to work individually from command lines and link properly.

How do I indicate to 'Xscanimage' which scanners are available?
Xscanimage starts properly from the console, if I select my scanner
explicitly: % xscanimage hp:/dev/scanner
Without the scanner identification, it fails. I want to set up two:
'pnm' and 'hp'.
% scanimage -L
likewise fails, as unable to find any scanner device.

% find-scanners properly identifies the two /dev entries for the actual
scanner (which is an HP4p on an aha1502E, non-BIOS, SCSI card), but says
nothing with regard to 'pnm:*'.

These are running under Linux 2.0.33 from RH4.2, with libc.5.*A.

TIA, and apologies again.
