There is the SANE API documentation available in the Documentation
section of the SANE homepage. It describes the API that a backend is
supposed to implement, the datatypes, and that sort of thing. It
doesn't describe implementation techniques or how to use the sane_scsi
stuff, but that can be gleaned by looking at a couple of the backends
and consulting the programming docs for your scanner.

As far as I know, there is no beginner's guide to writing a SANE
backend.
