Questions on UMAX 1220S

Hello,

I have a few questions that pertain directly to 1220S users and that
don't
necessarily pertain to SANE (or to Unix, for that matter) directly. I'm
hoping
it won't offend anyone. Also, I'm currently not subscribed to the list
but
since I'd like to have a few answers to go on when I get home tonight,
I'm
sending my questions immediately. I hope you can help me.

- I got an Adaptec AVA-1502 card from a friend to replace the one
supplied by
UMAX, until I can afford a newer one. The card came with another
scanner
(Mustek?) and allows only an external device to be attached to it.
When I
plug my scanner on it, the green light flashes constantly. On Win95,
using
the scanning software provided by UMAX, I can't get a picture scanned
properly. I get slanted lines of blue and green and red but nothing
that
even remotely looks like it's trying to scan the photograph on my
scanner.
Could that be attributed to the SCSI card I'm using? Has anyone
managed to
at least get theirs to work on Win95 with a card other that the
UMAX-provided one?

- I figured maybe Win95 is the one to blame (usually is). I recompiled
my
kernel (2.0.32 I think) with Adaptec 152x support included (not as a
module). I also included generic SCSI support in my configuration.
When I
rebooted, I checked the messages and I get something like scsi: 0
hosts
found. I haven't found a SCSI HOWTO so I'm not really sure what that
message
means. I'm planning on swapping my SCSI cards to try the UMAX-provided
card
and at least making sure that it works on Win95. BTW, I still get that
flashing light when rebooting on Linux. On the UMAX site, it says that
it
may be something wrong with the cable or something. But their software
sees
the scanner and when I tell it to scan, the light moves. The data
returned
to my machine is gibberish though.

- I compiled and installed the latest version of SANE and it only
reports that
it can find the pnm devices. I haven't yet bee thru all the docs but
should
-L automatically find the device? Does it poll the scsi card?

- Why is there no on/off switch on this unit? Sheesh!

- I still have an option (for a few days) to swap my unit for a 1200S
instead.
Would you recommend that?

- Has anyone undertaken the task of writing a driver for the UMAX SCSI
card?
If I can make that work, it might be more interesting than buying
another
card, at least until I get more SCSI devices.

That's it for now. I thank you in advance for your replies. Please note
that
it is preferable to reply to lduperval@sprint.ca (which is what my
Reply-To
field is set to so if you've got a good mail agent, you don't have to
worry
about it).

Laurent
