Yes. This is the common case. Only a few very new boards/chipsets are prepared
to have a 10:10:10 mapping for 30 bits precision.

However there exist 16 bit greyscale systems for medical image processing
(X rays) and a few 3x16=48 bit systems used for similar purposes.

However I'd start worrying about those when we come across them. SANE
is able to read >8bpp data from the device, so ...
