I'm also getting the same problems. Like Rob, my programming experience
also extends to 'make ' and 'make install'.
I too am running a Cyrix P150+ but with SuSE 5.1. My scanner is a
Mustek 600 CD.

I did try to edit gtkglue.c and get rid of the tool tips but ended up
making things worse (see above, limited programmming experience).
