Gamma correction and Astra 1200s?

Hi, I've tried to get SANE built with xscanimage, but even with the
patches for the newest gtk, I can't get it to work. Therefore, I'm
trying to use scanimage with my Umax Astra 1200s. Things work really
well for scanning prints, but it's very dark trying to scan slides or
negatives. I've tried the --custom-gamma with various --gamma-table
strings, and have yet to meet with success getting anything other than a
black scan when I select this option. Without the option, scans work,
but are too dark to be usable. As I understand it, I can't use analog gamma
correction in color mode with the 1200s. Can someone explain to me what
I'm doing wrong, or is there no way at all to gamma correct these images?

Thanks for any assistance,

Paul
