sane 0.71 and microtek E3

Hi. Just decided to give sane a try with my microtek E3.

First I should mention that the scanned DOES work with the old mtekscan
program. No problems.

I have gtk .99,3 installed and that runs gimp fine.

./configure ran fine for creating sane. Then did a make; make install.
Again, noproblems

I have modified /usr/local/etc/sane-d/ddd-conf so that only microtek is
uncommented. Since this is my only scanner, it makes sense.

The microtek.conf file has changed /dev/scanner to /dev/sga.

Now, when I run xscaniamge the program seems to load, pause for a few
seconds, then I get the bash prompt back.

I can get xcam to run and load. If I press <play>, life goes on hold for
about 1/2 minute, then I get a message about an i/o error (don't recall
exactly). My READY light on the scanner has gone off in this process.

scanimage hangs and then prints 'sane-start: error during device i/o'.

find-scanner produces the important line:

find-scanner: found scanner " Scanner 1.80" at device /dev/sga

so...damned if I have any more ideas at this point!

HELP PLEASE!
