HP scanner backend very slow - why?

Hi all,

I have an HP Scanjet 4c with tranny adapter attached to my Linux 2.0.33
box, using Gimp v 0.99.19, Gtk v0.99.4, and sane-0.71.

I can scan successfully, however the scanning process takes an
unbelievably long time, sometimes up to 15 minutes.

The scanner responds immediately when I ask it to scan, makes a couple
of whirring noises as if it's lining up the scan head, then it stops
dead in its tracks for a looooong time - then it scans the picture and
ends. During this time, xscanimage is locked up totally, and does not
respond to mouse events or screen redraws.

Any idea what's wrong? I am caught between a machine that takes 20
minutes to do one scan under Linux, or to do 3 scans in 10 minutes under
windows, and then have the machine hang on me.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Graham
