Sorry for being unclear.
I upgraded to RH5 and gtk 0.99.3, and did not run sane in between.
I got the same error 'fail in ...-init' so I thought it was gtk related,
but the error was that the upgrade had altered the perms.
My xscanimage now works great with 0.99.3
