Problems with running under the Gimp

Dear sir,
My name is Vassili Akimov. I just became SANE user and really enjoy the
thing. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I am experiensed SANE/Gimp user
so I cannot run xscanimage as plugin of Gimp. It is not a big deal but
if you would advise me what I have to do to be able finally start up the
xscanimage under the Gimp I would really appretiate. I have SANE version
0.70 and Gimp version 0.99.18. Scanner is HP scanjet 5p. I linked
xscanimage into my .gimp/plugins directory as it described in man but
when Gimp starts and fires up the plugins, xscanimage complains : "-g
unrecognised option" and then gives me list of avaliable options.
Afterall I cannot find xscanimage in any of Gimp menues. If you would
point me what I made wrong I would really appretiate. Thank you very
