request for comments on hardware

hello all,

i have spent some time looking through the SANE web site, discussion
area, and deja news, and i have the following questions:

i am considering the following list of scanners: UMAX Astra 1200S
Microtek E3 And E6
HP 5P

does anyone have any comments on which of these scanners would be the best
for the dollar?

i have read that Astra 1200S does not work with an adaptec 2940UW and that
the Microtek E6 does not support SCSI-2 disconnect/reselect. My system
currently has 2 SCSI cards, a zip zoom card (i believe it is the same as
the adaptec 1540) with a zip drive and an adaptec AHA-2940UW with my hard
drive attached.

i suspect that the scanner would have to be on the 1540 controller so as
not t cause any system degradation. does this seem most reasonable?
should i be concerned about any hardware incompatibilities with these two
SCSI cards and any of the above scanners?

my overall impression is that the Astra 1200S and Microtek E6 are about
the same scanner at about the same price (around $200 mail order).
however, the HP 5P is siginificantlky higher (about $299 mail order). is
there any reason to spend the extra money for the HP?

at the moment, the primary use use of the scanner would be for scanning
images for web pages and possibly some techinical drawings (black and
white).

i am interested in hearing any success stories from people with similiar
systems and any other general comments!

thanks!!

tim
