I use sane since 0.67 with success with Astra 610S scanner.
No "black area" on 0.67 nor 0.68.

Tekram DC-390 (PCI), shown as "am53c974" in /proc/scsi.

Don't know, but the "black area" seems to be of constant size (in
bytes), since its size (in pixel) change between grey & color mode and
with resolution.
I Will try the 2nd patch now.
