Try running xscanimage under strace, ie
$ strace -o /tmp/scan.trace xscanimage ....
Them examime the output file for signals and other errors.

| having the same problem on Red Hat Linux 5.0 (kernel 2.0.33). Again,
| scanimage works fine, but xscanimage terminates immediately upon being
