UMAX scanner on a Sparc

I was trying to use sane 0.68 with Solaris 2.5 on my sparc 2 workstation.
The scanner I have is a UMAX Astra 1200S, one that is supported. I
compiled the program with gcc2.7 and gmake 3.74. It appears to compile
fine although I get an error with the version of "sed" I have for
a "gmake install". I think it just doesn't link one of the libraries
which I just did by hand.

The problem is, I don't see the device anywhere in the /dev directory.
There is no /dev/scanner or /dev/sg**. There is /dev/sd* for the
hard drives and an /dev/rst* for the tape drive (and an rsd*).

On the SCSI chain, I have a hard drive first (SCSI 2), a tape drive
second (SCSI 4), and then the scanner (SCSI 5) with a 25-pin terminator
(not active - I think). The scanner isn't seen after a boot up of the
computer. I realize the suggestion is to have the scanner on a separate
bus (so it doesn't lock up the other devices on a scan) but it would
be nice to know if it will get recognized.

Is my cabling right? Its a mini-centronics to centronics-50 to the
hard drive, centronics-50 to centronics-50 to the tape drive, and
centronics-50 to DB25 to the scanner (and db25 terminator on the scanner).

Is there some special thing to do to get Solaris to recognize the device?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Jeff Goldman
