Umax S-12 troubles (Linux)

First of all, I want to thank all the developers for a great package that
has freed me from the last dying gasps of Windows. I have a problem with
my Umax S-12 and hanging scans. It happens at random times during a scan,
and sometimes not at all - it probably occurs in about a third of all
scans. The scanner will hang, along with the rest of the SCSI bus. The
output of scanimage with SANE_DEBUG_UMAX set to 128 follows:

snipped....
[umax] reader_process: buffer of 27531 bytes read; 10204824 bytes to go
[umax] get_data_buffer_status
[umax] sane_read: read 2955 bytes
[umax] read_data_block
[umax] scanner ready
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] reader_process: buffer of 27531 bytes read; 10177293 bytes to go
[umax] get_data_buffer_status
[umax] sane_read: read 4096 bytes
[umax] sane_read: read 2955 bytes

It looks like there should be another read_data_block here, but there
isn't. Everything comes to a halt. I kill the scanimage program, but
nothing happens. I usually can try to read something from my Jaz drive and
that will reset the bus and allow scanimage to die and cancel the scan
properly. It's happened in all SANE's since 0.66, including 0.68 and 0.67
with the umax patch. Is this a known problem? I'll be happy to give any
more info you need.

While I'm at it, i have an xscanimage nitpick dealing with the preview
window. With it open, sliding the resolution slider (for example) gets a
lot slower and it looks like the preview window is being redrawn with each
incremental movement of the resolution slider. Is this necessary? I can
see redrawing for the window sliders since you have to redraw the
rectangle, though. Also - the preview window refuses to close, also since
0.66, but I suspect these might be more GTK's problems rather than SANE's.

All pertinent info I could think of:

Pentium 90, 80mb ram
Redhat 4.2, Linux kernel 2.0.32
BusLogic BT-948 SCSI card
sane 0.68, gtk+-971109

Scanner is reported as:

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
Vendor: UMAX Model: UMAX S-12 Rev: V2.0
Type: Scanner ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Keep up the good work and TIA for any help.

Ryan
