I am not sure if this is a problem of the umax-driver.
Other Astra 1200S users don't have this problem, so at first I think
it could have to to with your scsi-card, the scsi-bus or the
scsi-driver.
At first please check if your scsi-bus is terminated correctly!
Then try to scan small areas and have a look if this works.
Then try different modes (lineart,greyscale,color) and see if there
are any differences.
