Color problems with SANE and UMAX UC630

I have successfully compiled and installed sane-0.67 on a Linux system
with a UMAX UC630 scanner attached using a SCSI host adapter.

Now I am trying to get useful scans from it.

This is my first experience with a scanner of any sort (using any OS), so
please excuse my novice questions.

I have experimented with scanimage and xscanimage, but the results are
always the same. The color of the image is very poor, and I don't know
what adjustments to make to improve it. I have fiddled with the "white
level" and "black level" sliders, but to no avail. I have also made
adjustments using the gamma tables in xscanimage, but the previews always
look the same.

I am guessing that a gamma table that works for on UC630 would work for
all of them. Does anyone have one that they can provide?

If not, could someone tell me how to go about correcting the color
problems? I don't know where to begin.

Thanks in advance for your help.
