SANE installation.

Sorry if this is not an appropriate list for my installation questions.
I've been unsuccessful in installing sane on my Debian Linux system.

I installed the gimp as a statically linked Debian package, since
I doesn't compile without Motif. Still I couldn't compile the sane
source code, as it complained about lacking certain gimp libraries.
I tried the gtk source, but again no Motif. I finally grabbed the
Red Hat rpm package for sane, but scanimage and xscanimage give
error messages:

scanimage: can't load library 'libsane.so.0'

Could someone tell me what the minimum requirements are for installing
sane, with necessary gimp libraries? Better yet, is there a FAQ
document which answers all of these questions and more?
