You can set -backtrack=yes on the commandline, too.

It forces the scanner to move back a little when restarting after a buffer-
end. However this will increase scanning time quite a bit.

Hack the source to have the default be on. Shouldn't be hard to find.

No. Maybe a thing to think about. But probably rather a frontend issue of
saving "preferred parameters".
