Not in general. There was a glitch with the libtool that was included
in sane-0.6 (I think) that caused wrong shared library names to be
generated under Linux. sane-0.62 should work as intended though, but
if you have installed an earlier version of SANE, you might want to
delete /usr/local/lib/libsane* before doing a fresh install just to be
on the safe side.

The only thing that intentionally does _not_ get overwritten are the
configuration files.

To debug your problem, have you tried setting SANE_DEBUG_MUSTEK and/or
SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_SCSI to 128 and run scanimage that way?
