I had the same problem. The output from sane was
[mustek] line_distance: got factor=2, (r/g/b)=(0/5/9)
[mustek] line_distance: fixed up to factor=2, (r/g/b)=(0/5/9)
[mustek] get_image_status: bytes_per_line=5172, lines=1182
[mustek] lines_per_buffer=19, bytes_per_line=5172
[sanei_scsi] sanei_scsi_cmd: bad write (errno=Out of memory)
[mustek] reader_process: read_data failed with status=9
[mustek] read 0 bytes
i finnaly found out that my kernel had a smaller SG_BIG_BUFFER value,
than SANE because I booted the wrong kernel (not the recompiled one
with the bigger value). This caused the error because SANE tried to use
more buffer than was available.
ciao Philipp
