Looks like the SANE configure did not find the gtk libraries. If you
installed gtk _after_ running the SANE configure, you'll have to rerun
it again (best to do make clean, configure, make, make install to be
on the safe side).

Looks like an X server bug to me. Or maybe a gtk bug. I have never
seen anything like that on my machine (which is limited to 8bpp).
