Hi,

yesterday I subscribed to this list and found in the mail archive:

I have to second this. Preview works, but SLOW, really SLOW. It seems to
me, that preview scans the image line by line, therefore I gave up after
10 minutes and appr. 10% of the image scanned. BTW, preview eats all
available memory (128 MB), and my machine (Debian 1.3, 2xP133, 2.0.30-SMP,
Adaptec 2940) starts to swap ...

I guess that I'm the second one, then. The SCSI id is C5110A (Rev:3638).
Scanimage works fine; except, that contrast adjustments are not accepted.
In a quick and dirty hack I uncommented line 437 in hp.c in order to get
contrast going.

I'm not running RedHat, but I'd like to report what I had to do in order
to compile and install sane and gtk (files from last Friday) on my system
(no older versions installed):

1. "./configure" runs smoothly in gtk.

2. compilation stops in gdk complaining about not finding "-lglib" (Sorry,
I don't have the output at hand.)

3. adding "-L/path-to-gtk-source/glib/.libs" to "libgdk_la_LDFLAGS" in
"gdk/Makefile" made the compilation finish without further errors.
(Is this hack correct ?)

4. "./configure" and "make" run smoothly in sane.

5. "make install" stops while installing the man pages. I had to create
"usr/local/man/man1" and "/usr/local/man/man5" with mkdir in order to
let "make install" finish without errors.
(Shouldn't make and/or install create a directory if not present ?)

So, that is all I have to report ( so far ;-) ). I'd like to thank all
the developers of SANE; keep on goin ...

Last question:

Does anyone of you HP scanner users know, what the exact settings for
brightness and contrast are, if one likes to get the same images from
scanimage, as one gets from HP's Windoze PaperPort (screen resolution of
75 dpi) ????

Bye,

Michael
