I have fixed three more bugs in this area since the last release.
I.e., I'm working on it. But if you can debug the problem, it would
be of great help.

Probably a GTK bug. Pete fixed a lot of things and I fixed a few
things as well. As GIMP nears it's 1.0 release, these things should
disappear. Can you try the next GTK & SANE release when they become
available and see whether it fixes the problems you were seeing?
